Condolence: Barbara, I know lorraine, my wife, and I never had opportunity to socialize with uou and Arthur and I think the reason was that Arthur was more a quiet man and couldn't take a chance on being talked to oblivion by yours truly. I say that respectfully because at all the TU Banquets he always asked to sit at my table. He always pulled his weight at banquets by selling raffle and bucket tickets. Only once did I feel so terrible about outbidding against him for the Fran Betters 5wt. Fly rod because when I did get the bid, I saw the look on his face. I had so much respect for him. You might remember, I called you before he got home. Fortunately , you had not bought him a serious present for Christmas and I was so relieved to mitigate my wrong doing. Thank you, Barbara, for that. He did talk to me a month or so later and expressed his appreciation for that great surprise. I hope he had chances to use it when he wasn't on a project.


I met Art many moons ago ( over two or three decades) and we clicked immediately because, I think, I liked to talk and Art liked to listen. However, I must say Arthur commanded respect from everyone who met him because when he did speak....it was evident that he knew what he was talking about. Of his many accomplishments, I think his most impressive effort was the stream surveying and temperature loggers really stand out. He raised the bar for improving the work on the Battenkill and White Creek and other streams aside from the 313 annual cleanups.


Back in the old dayswhen we had work parties on stream projects, we always had more volunteers than we needed and unfortunately I was on the docket at meetings asking for help for my projects which meant my sign-up sheet passed around first and filled up fast. I knew Art would be asking for help on his projects and was sort of soft sell so I would plug his project right after mine saying his was just as important so the group would be there too. We always liked being on his team because he always had coffee and donuts to start it off. He had Bill Donato prepare lunch and Bill too,

knew what he was doing. After Donato stepped down Bill Cosgrove followed the format and everyone ate well. Another thing; Art was able to collaborate with some of our best like Greg Cuda (TU), John Braico of National TU, Gene Webster (TU), Dusty Rhoades (TU), Doug Howard (TU), Stan Duncan (TU)and Roy Lambortun (TU) and others. Before he passed he had trained our guys in an improved method of stream improvement projects of which we are so grateful. Arthur's benevolence is more than noteworthy and will ensure the programs will be ongoing. We are all so grateful for having such a leader with us and he will never be forgotten.


From my standpoint, I was so impressed back in 2000-2001 when Art was one of three principles who managed to be present just about every day when we built the handicapp Accessable dock in Sch'dy's Central Park. Art even showed up when he had injured his hand aand it was bitter cold. At least he and another guy , Bill Crawford, knew what end of the hammer to use. We had many great volunteers in on that project called “Project Access”. I developed more than respect for Art during that project. Art was a true friend and truly a man for all Reasons ! !

Condolence: To the Coleman family and all of Art's friends,
Art was a wonderful fellow. I met him through his work on river restoration. He had a quiet spirit but he was like the energizer rabbit. He would happily survey the coldest streams! I was amazed and impressed. I admired his energy, knowledge, skills and humor. He was the nicest of men. He has left the world a better place and I am honored to have known him. Condolence: My condolences to Barb, Liz, Doug, and Robert on the loss of a very kind, pensive, and and brilliant mind. I am shocked to just learn of Art's passing.
Cousin Art was a part of my youth, spending summers in Danby, Vermont with Uncle Marty, Aunt Grace, Sue, and Art. I looked up to Art and Sue, some 8 and 10 years older than I was. My memories of Art include camping with him at Hapgood Pond, driving to pick him up from road crews, watching him box in the barn, and especially bringing him back to Harvard each fall.
Uncle Marty and my grandfather, Bob DeForge, would be in the car's front seat; Art, my brother Mark, and I would ride in the back seat. Marty, Bob, and Art would carry his belongings up to the old brick dorms in Harvard Yard while my brother and I waited in the car. I hated driving back to Clinton after because Uncle Marty and Bob would argue and yell at each about whether or not they were on the right side or the wrong side of the Charles River. I am not sure as to why I had to bring Art back to Harvard every fall, but it must have been a good experience because many years later, I, myself, graduated also from Harvard.
The next time that you are out walking in the woods, listen carefully, and you might be lucky enough to his voice whisper, "I am fine and not lost".

Condolence: The Clearwater Chapter of Trout Unlimited was very fortunate to have Art join, and eventually lead, much of our river conservation work. His quiet unassuming personality, polite persistence, and effective contribution of countless hours, resulted in many trout management accomplishments.
His legacy includes improved trout habitat and fishing on the Batten Kill and many other streams, and the continuation of initiatives he started.
I was privileged to work with him on projects spanning almost 2 decades. He will be missed by all the chapter volunteers who worked with him.

Condolence: We were sorry to hear of Art's passing. We have fond memories of you and your family and the times we shared together. Art was a great friend and mentor when he and Bill worked together at GE Silicone. We are praying for you.

Condolence: We were so sorry to hear of Art's passing. We live on Mariaville Lake and share a boundary line on the south edge of our woodlot behind our house. Art was a soft spoken gentleman who spoke with us many years ago about management options for our property, and walked the woods with us on a few different occasions. I was impressed with his passion and knowledge regarding the woods, and in helping us formulate responsible plans for the future. It was a pleasure to have known him, and an equal pleasure to call him a neighbor and friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Condolence: I knew Art only through the Landis Arboretum, a place that he loved. He was both a gentle man and a gentleman who had the utmost respect for Nature. I offer you my condolences and this quotation: "If you would know strength and patience, welcome the company of trees."

Condolence: Hopefully Art's family can take some solace that those who knew him loved him and respected his quiet but commanding foresight. He was a gentleman who would tenaciously pursue his endeavors. It was my pleasure and honor to have known and worked with Art through Trout Unlimited. He will be missed.

Condolence: Such a kind hearted and humble family man... I remember how he made wooden toys for children in need. Each was made with love and care and without a doubt enjoyed by each receiving child.
