Obituary for Arthur Edward Coleman

DATELINE – BALLSTON LAKE, NY
Arthur E. Coleman, 79, of Ballston Lake, NY, loving husband, father, brother and uncle died Friday. He is pre-deceased by his mother, Grace (Derosia) Coleman, father, Martin Coleman, Sr. and his sister, Suzanne (Coleman) Morris. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara (Van Sickle) Coleman, the love of his life. They have three children; Elizabeth (Douglas Fish) of Clifton Park, NY, Robert and Douglas both of Ballston Lake, NY, brother, Martin Coleman, Jr. of Mt. Tabor, VT, granddaughter, Lillian, and several nieces and nephews.
He is a graduate of Burr and Burton Academy, Manchester, VT, where he discovered his passion for chemistry and where he gave the commencement address in 1981. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Harvard University and a doctorate in Chemistry from R.P.I. Shortly after, he started Silar Laboratories, Inc. During his career he authored several patents for silicone chemicals. During his retirement, he enjoyed fly fishing in the Battenkill and Big Branch, VT. He spent time volunteering with USGS, US Fish and Wildlife and Trout Unlimited on stream stabilization and habitat improvement projects. He also coordinated roadside cleanup efforts along a section of route 313 in Greenwich. He was an avid woodworker and spent time on his land in Mariaville, NY managing the wood lot and planting trees as a certified Master Forest Owner. He enjoyed wood walks and the Eastern NY Woodworkers Association annual woodworkers show in Saratoga Springs, NY. He volunteered at the Landis Arboretum in Esperance, NY where he also funded the Art and Barbara Coleman Lilac Collection and other projects.
He will be remembered and missed for his hard work, generosity, and loyalty to his family. A celebration of his life is being planned. Many thanks and appreciation to the doctors and nurses who took care of him.
