Obituary for Carmen J. "Shrimpy" Surento Jr.

Carmen J. “Shrimp” Surento, Jr., age 71, passed on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam, NY with his loving family by his side. Carmen was born on July 25, 1945 in Amsterdam, NY and was the son of the late Carmen J. Surento, Sr. and Gertrude (Bellows) Surento.

Educated in the Amsterdam School district, Carmen worked as an equipment operator for the NYS Department of Transportation in Fultonville, NY. Earlier he worked at General Electric as a sheet metal worker helper. He was a wiz at crossword puzzles and loved his Wednesday card games at Herks. Carm always had a jigsaw puzzle in the works, which were later framed and placed throughout the house. He was an avid Steelers fan and looked forward to the yearly game experience with his boys. Carm was a family guy who enjoyed his life. His family would gather every Sunday to catch up with each other over a plate of Carm’s famous spaghetti dinner. Recently he found a new best friend in his granddaughter’s rescue dog, Fievel.

Carmen was a devoted husband to Gloria (Calleo) Surento and loving father to Timothy James (Kimberly Kiaunis) Surento, Carmen James Surento, III, and Scott Edmund Surento; brother of Sisto (Roberta) Surento, Stephanna (Elton) Surento Collins and Rosemarie Surento. He was the beloved grandfather of Timothy James Surento Jr., Danielle Joan Surento, and Aaron Vincent Surento. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins as well as friends and neighbors who will dearly miss him.


All are welcome to attend Carm’s funeral service on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at 1:00 PM at Betz, Rossi, Bellinger and Stewart Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010.

Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Saturday from 11:00 AM-1:00 PM at the funeral home prior to the service.

Interment will be in St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Amsterdam, NY.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN.
