Obituary for James Scott Lewis
Dateline: Scotia, NY
James Scott Lewis, age 51, died on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at Albany Medical Center Hospital surrounded by his loving family, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Philadelphia, PA and was the son of Karin Ebsworth Demis and the late Charles Lewis, Jr (Captain US Army). Scott was a graduate of Ravena Coeymans Selkirk High School, class of 1985, graduate of HVCC in 1999, and earned his Physicians Assistant degree at Touro College. Scott was a dedicated medical provider, demonstrating compassion, kindness and a passion for educating others. Scott completed his career as a Major in the New York Army National Guard, most recently serving at Fort Hamilton, NY, as part of the 24th Civil Support Team. He previously served with the Medical Command at the Watervliet Arsenal, NY. His military career began in 1987, in the United States Marine Corps as a helicopter crew chief, followed by a career in the United States Army, undergoing Combat Aviation training at Fort Rucker, Alabama. He served in both Gulf Wars and served during rescue operations at the World Trade Center.
Scott was an avid outdoor enthusiast, spending much time in the Adirondacks, hiking, camping with friends, snowshoeing, skate skiing and canoeing. He traveled the world extensively, enjoyed skydiving, scuba diving, and held a private pilot’s license. His passions included BigFoot, fish oil and his gyrocopter. He was a avid NY Giants fan. Scott was a member the Albany Greene County 4-H, raising livestock and exhibiting at the Altamont Fair as a child. He was extremely athletic from an early age, with his early sports career including judo and wrestling, later serving as wresting team Co-Captain in his high school senior year. He was also a member of the Adirondack Three Style Wrestling Association (ATWA). He continued his wrestling career as a member of the USMC Wrestling team at Quantico. He took great pride in his lifelong physical fitness.
Survivors in addition to his mother include his loving siblings, John (Bernadette) DeMis, Barbara (Greg Austin) Lewis, Robert (Kristen) Demis, Geoffrey (Christina Lowes) Demis, Kevin (Dawn) Demis, Beth (James) Nalbone, Nancy (Bruce Turetsky) DeMis, Cindy (Joe Proll) Lewis, Christopher (Roopal) Lewis, William (Mary) DeMis, Amy DeMis; nieces and nephews Shauna Baron, Stephanie (Thomas) Siciliano, Chelsea and Brigham Carman, Morgan and Isabella Demis, Emily, Maggie, James and Lucas Nalbone, Daniel and Emma Turetsky. Scott is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family who will deeply miss him.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Monday, July 23, 2018 from 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Meyers Funeral Home, 741 Delaware Ave., Delmar, NY 12054.
All are welcome to attend his funeral on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Meyers Funeral Home.
Interment with full military honors will be held on Tuesday at 2:00 PM in Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY.
