Obituary for Clifford Hayes

Clifford  Hayes
Clifford Wesley Hayes, 80, of Alplaus Avenue, Alplaus, passed away on Wednesday, April 25, 2018. Born on November 19, 1937, he was the youngest child of the late Livingston L. Hayes and Marion Van Vorst Hayes. Besides his parents, Clifford was predeceased by his brother, Donald L. Hayes in 1960, and sister, Charlotte Stern in 2011. He was raised in Alplaus and graduated from Nott Terrace High School in 1955. He graduated from Hudson Valley Technical Institute (HVCC) in 1958 with a degree in Electronics.

Clifford was employed by General Electric as an electro-mechanical technician in Pittsfield, Utica and Schenectady for 27 years and by ITT Telecommunications in Nutley, NJ and Milan, TN for 10 years. He was a leader in his community and chosen Alplaus Citizen of the Year in 2013. He was the historian for the village of Alplaus, former fire commissioner for the Alplaus Fire Department and a member of the Schenectady Historical Society and the GE Quarter Century Club.

Cliff was a keen observer and genuinely interested in people, asking them about themselves and remembering details about their lives. He was dedicated to his family and friends, and a devoted caregiver to his mother and sister. Cliff was an avid runner in his younger years and completed six marathons. Home projects, gardening, horse race handicapping, baseball and college basketball watching were among his favorite pastimes. He was a fan of Siena basketball and the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Cliff is survived by nieces Linda (Charlie) Babb of Searsport, ME, and Holly Montone of Charlotte, NC; nephew, Stephen (Janna) Hayes of Ballston Spa; niece, Lori Hayes (Ira) Neifeld of Wilton; grandniece Sondra Montone of Saratoga Springs, grandnephews John Montone of Charleston, SC, and Ethan Babb of Portland ME; cousins Robert (Meredith) Van Vorst of Scotia, Douglas (Mara) Van Vorst and their children, Emma, Jacob, and Ethan of Charlton; Susan Van Vorst of Scotia and Kenneth (Michelle) Van Vorst of Denver, CO.

Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Townley and Wheeler Funeral Home, 21 Midline Rd., Ballston Lake, NY. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 2 at 1:00 pm at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens, Watervliet-Shaker Road, Colonie. In lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alplaus United Methodist Church, 3 Brookside Ave, Alplaus, NY 12008 or the Schenectady City Mission, 425 Hamilton Street, Schenectady, NY 12305.
