Obituary for Sidney H. Jasmin

Sidney H. Jasmin, age 91, of West Drive died peacefully at Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga Springs, NY on Monday, March 13, 2017. He was born on April 18, 1925 in Rutland, VT to the late Rolla Maxime Sr. and Iona Bell Jasmin.
Even as a young man Sidney felt called to serve his community. He was a former member and altar server at Trinity Episcopal Church in Rutland, VT. At the young age of 18, Sidney again found the need to serve and enlisted in the United States Army. He bravely fought as a gunner with the 387th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion during World War II and in 1946 was honorably discharged having earned a Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, Army of Occupation Medal and the Germany Theater Campaign Ribbon. During his career in the Army he was assigned to transport German War Prisoners (SS soldiers) to Stuttgart to stand trial for war crimes. Even after the conflict had ended, Sidney remained behind with fellow soldiers to stand guard at General George S. Patton’s hospital door at the 130th Station Hospital at Heidelberg until his death.
Upon returning home to Rutland, Sidney began his career. He and his wife owned and operated Mullin Funeral Home and the Jasmin Discount Center in West Rutland, VT. From there he began working as an Assistant Foreman in the pressroom at the Rutland Herald staying on for 30 years. He then moved on to The Leader Herald in Gloversville, NY and the Daily Gazette in Schenectady, NY finally retiring at age 80.
Not only did Sidney find great joy in his work, he also found pride in volunteering. When he wasn’t at his hunting camp in the hills of Vermont or skiing whether it be on snow or water, Sidney could be found at any number of community organizations. Throughout his adult life he was a member of the Eagles Club, the Knights of Columbus, West Rutland Rotary Club. He was the past president of the West Rutland Little League and Lifetime Member of the West Rutland American Legion Post 87. Sidney was also known to get up on stage and crack a few jokes to raise money for the local PTA.
Sidney is predeceased by his parents Rolla Maxine and Iona (Bell) Jasmin, Sr., spouses Jeanette Young Jasmin and Theodosia “Dodie” Mullin Jasmin; brothers Rolla Jasmin, Jr., and Richard “Bob” Jasmin; sister-in-law Fern Jasmin and Elizabeth Fox Jasmin and nephew Raleigh Jasmin.
He was the beloved husband of Theresa; loving father of Debora Jasmin of West Rutland, VT., Lt. Col. Michael A. Jasmin, US Army Ret. Of Centreville, VA, Sgt. 1st Class Neil Jasmin US Army Ret. and his wife Sabrina of Hot Springs Village, AR., David J. Jasmin and his wife Natasha of Malta, NY, and Craig E. Jasmin and his wife Robin of Ft. Edward, NY; caring brother of James Barker Jasmin and his wife Mary; doting grandfather of Robyn Samuels and her husband Kyle, Brittany Jasmin and her fiancé Nate Wright, Amanda Jasmin and Pierce Jasmin; proud great-grandfather of Amihay and Kyle Samuels, Jr.; beloved uncle of four nephews and several nieces.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Saturday, March 18, 2017 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at St. Luke’s On the Hill Episcopal Church at 40 McBride Road, Mechanicville, NY.
A Requiem Mass will immediately follow at 1:00 pm.
Fr. Dave Haig will officiate.
Interment with full military honors will be held in the Spring in Evergreen Cemetery, Center Rutland, VT.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Albany DAV in C/O of Townley and Wheeler Funeral Home, 21 Midline Rd., Ballston Lake, NY 12019.
